November Golf

November is usually the worst month to be hanging out in Vancouver. Winter weather starts to roll in and which brings rain, rain, and more rain. The mountains are not open yet, or if they are its only the bunny runs. Basically you are stuck inside unless you like to walk around in cold rain.

Luckily the sun decided to come out on two weekends this year which allowed me to play a couple rounds at the pitch and putt just down the street from me in Stanley Park. The course is a full 18 holes with each hole being a par 3 and for $14.50 a round, its a pretty good deal for golf in Vancouver. Generally on nice days the course is very busy in the afternoons, especially in the summer months. It takes forever to do a round on a saturday afternoon in the middle of summer. The best times to go are sunday mornings or during a week day.  Luckily in November it isn't as popular, regardless both times I met friends at about 10 in the morning to start the day off  right. The course still had the morning dew and by the end of the round there were some wet shoes. I lost both games but I had one good round for me with a score of 69, +15!
Below are some  photos I took with my phone

Lining up my shot

This was on the 10th hole, just yesterday. When the ball landed it created a giant splash.  There was no way I could even hit the ball it was completely below the surface. Course is a bit wet Lately

Gas Town Grandprix

The return of the gastown grandprix was this past week.  It is a cycling event that sees riders race around a closed loop track through the streets of gastown.
Luckily my office is in gastown and I was able to get a couple photos before I headed home. I only stayed for a couple laps of the womens, but the guy in jeans was my hands down favorite to win the men's race. jeans = aerodynamics

Island and Ontario Fun

Canada long weekend kicked off with a visit to Vancouver Island. The main reason for the trip was to attend the Long Lake Wakeboard Tournament in Nanaimo, but it was also a great chance to hang out with my Uncle and family in Port Alberni.
The two day contest was the first event for the local B.C. wakeboarders. Most of the participants were from the island or Vancouver with a few travelling from the Okanagan. It was a fun two days and all proceeds from the event went to the Nanaimo Child development center.  After the event wrapped up the Sunday I caught the ferry back to Vancouver, just in time to see some Canada Day  fireworks.
Holiday Monday was a travel day as I heading to the airport and flew into Kitchener. The week at home could not have been better, the sun was out all week and it was hot.  I saw many friends and family over the week as I hung out at Lake Rosalind, checked out the Ranch wakepark in Newmarket, visited with my niece and nephews, had a day on Gould Lake and just relaxed. The week was capped off with Jenna and Josh Elvidge's wedding, two good friends since high school. It was a blast and I saw so many people that I hadn't seen in years, big thanks for putting on such a good day.

Here are some photos from the week.

Here is a quick run down Flute Bowl on Whistler Mountain during the world ski and snowboard festival April 21, 2012. Emily and I did a short five minute hike to get these fresh turns. I held the camera in my hand as I snowboarded, so its a bit shaky and all over the place. Enjoy!

CASI Park 2 Course

This past weekend I took the CASI (Canadian association of snowboard instructors) Park 2 course on Blackcomb mountain. At the start of the season I decided I would sign up for the course to keep my park riding skills up and of course to learn some new ways to teach in the park. The course was three days long with one day of skills presentations, one day of lesson presentations and one day of teaching. There was five fellow instructors taking the course, three from the U.K. living in whistler for the season, one Australian who works in a mine outside Kamloops as an Engineer and another Australian who come for a vacation just to take the course. It was great to ride with some new people and learn the different approached of how to teach in the park. The course was much more relaxed than previous courses that I have taken, much like park riding should be. We all had fun and we all ended up passing the course! My body still aches from some nasty falls but it feels good to accomplish a goal.

Spring Saturday, Board'n and Beach

Did some boarding up on grouse today. It was lots of fun, the sun was out and the snow was soft. Perfect for a session in the park. After a solid few hours and some knuckling of jumps my body decided it was time to go. When I got back downtown I couldn't resist going down to the beach at English Bay.

Earth Hour

We turned off the lights for Earth hour.

Blackcomb for the Day

Emily and I used up some bus tickets we had purchased and spent the day riding Blackcomb mountain in Whistler. It was a fun day with great conditions. We caught the bus at 6:30 a.m. and snoozed the whole trip, arriving in the village at about quarter past eight. We got some great runs in during the morning, including being some of the first people down spanky's ladder for the day. At lunch we met up with some friends and spent the afternoon cruising with them. Some more good runs were had, then it was time to head home on the bus. Overall it was a great day and it was great to see Ramsey, Jess, Pat and Leah.

Quicksilver Showdown over the City at Grouse Mountain

On saturday Grouse Mountain hosted the Quicksilver Showdown over the City, a snowboarding slope style contest with some of the Nation's best riders. Mother nature didn't disappoint with blue bird skies and temperatures above zero on the mountain. With conditions like this and a world class event to watch it was a no brainer to head up for the day. Emily and I met Pietra at the bus stop and we took transit up to the mountain.  We did some runs while practice was going on for the event.

 Pietra jazzed to shred.
Even with the event going on, the main park was still open and it was in fine condition.
Enjoying the View of Vancouver, Vancouver Island from the top of Grouse.

After some runs it was time to eat. The event had a mid ski run beer garden and BBQ set up right next to the second jump of the slope style course. While we ate we watched qualifying and saw some really really good snowboarding, and some really good bails. While at lunch I spotted Craig McMorris who I had met in the summer at wakeboard Nationals. Craig was in the event had a solid run and qualified for the finals. It was really great to see him in action. There was a break in the action before finals so Pietra and I did some more runs.

Beer Garden.

We returned to the beer garden to watch finals, there was ten riders with two runs each with their best run counting. Craig had an awesome first run, my favorite of the day but I might be a bit biased. Again there was some amazing boarding, and amazing crashes as everyone was going for the win. When it was all said and done Craig got third and we had an amazing day on the mountain. Big congrats to Craig, it was awesome to see him in action, and I hope next year's event is just as good.
